The Wakefield Horizontal Winter Roost Box is designed to trap the birds' body heat, keeping them warm and protecting them from the harsh winter elements. The entrance hole is located near the bottom of the box, trapping the warmth as it rises to the top and stays within. The entrance is also equipped with a sturdy slate guard, keeping out squirrels and other predators by preventing the enlargement of the entrance. A horizontal design is ideal for a winter roost, as the longer perch shelters a greater number of birds. To attract birds to your Winter Shelter, we recommend providing the birds with a source of food, such as our popular Wakefield Peanuts (search Wakefield Peanuts), which will draw the birds to your shelter and encourage them to nest. To mount your Wakefield Winter Roost Box, hang from a tree or post using the metal hanger included. A screw or nail (not included) should also be put through the hole at the bottom of the back panel. Mount it facing away from prevailing winds for maximum protection. To clean your winter roost, the front tilts out for easy access and the "L" hook holds the front panel securely closed. You should clean out the winter roost each Spring after use. The dimensions of this bird house are 7.8"H x 18"W x 15"D.
