No More Pennies? Monroe Calculators Are Built for What’s Next
The U.S. Mint Is Ending Penny Production. Here’s What That Means for Your Business
The U.S. Mint has confirmed what many have anticipated for years: the penny is being phased out. As the cost to produce the coin continues to outweigh its value, the penny is quickly becoming obsolete in both circulation and utility.
This carries real operational implications for businesses that accept or process cash, especially when it comes to rounding totals and maintaining accurate financial records.
We anticipated this shift, and our Monroe Heavy-Duty Printing Calculators are already built for it.

Why Is the Penny Going Away?
Producing a single penny currently costs the U.S. government more than double its face value. That economic inefficiency, combined with decreasing consumer demand, has led to serious discussions and now confirmed action to halt penny production.
Other countries have already made the move. Canada, for example, eliminated its penny in 2013, leading to the widespread adoption of nickel rounding to simplify cash transactions. Australia and New Zealand did the same years prior. Sweden has stopped utilizing coins almost completely, starting back in 1972.
Now, it is the United States' turn, and businesses must adjust.
What Is Nickel Rounding?

Nickel rounding refers to the practice of rounding cash transaction totals to the nearest five cents when pennies are no longer in circulation.
Here is how it works on our calculators:
- $8.23 rounds up to $8.25
- $12.28 rounds up to $12.30
- $4.21 rounds up to $4.25
- $15.27 rounds up to $15.30
It is a small numerical adjustment, but in high-volume environments, it adds up, both in transactions and potential inconsistencies.
Important Note: Nickel rounding applies only to cash transactions. Credit and debit payments are not affected and are still charged at exact totals. Also, our printing calculators will only round up totals, not round down.
What Challenges Will This Create?
For many businesses, especially in retail, hospitality, accounting, or professional services, the absence of pennies introduces several key challenges:
- Customer confusion may cause friction at the point of sale
- Inconsistent rounding habits lead to financial discrepancies
- Human error during cash handling affects drawer balances and reporting
- Manual rounding slows down transactions and increases employee workload
These are all issues that Monroe calculators were built to solve.

Why Monroe Is Ready When Others Are Not?
